Over the past years more and more Food & Beverage outlets have popped up in Dutch shopping areas. Eating and drinking has become an integral part of our shopping experience. This offers perks to both consumers and retailers. Consumers can enjoy a break in-between shopping and retailers benefit from the extended customer dwelling time close to their shops. Some retailers even jumped on the bandwagon and are now offering food and beverages themselves.

This blurring concept, in which more product offerings converge, recently made its appearance at the Dutch supermarket industry. While most supermarkets still focus on convenience or speed, concepts that center around experience entered the market. In order to surprise and retain customers, they offer a place where people can experience new products and brands, or join activities such as cooking workshops. Meals are prepared on the spot by professional chefs for take-away or to eat in the store’s restaurant as can be seen at Jumbo’s Foodmarkt. This way, supermarkets are transforming from an obligatory stop into a food experience destination.
